How Does Trailing Work?

missing persons, missing dog, missing cat, tracking, trailing, texas, search and rescue, K-9

Trailing K-9s are used to find a specific person. These canines use a scent article taken or left by the subject and follow the trail left by the subject. They generally are not tracking dogs, meaning they may not track the subject step for step, instead they use a combination of air and ground scenting to locate the subject. Trailing dogs work on leash and are most effective in finding specific subjects with a known last location.

By (1) having a scent article already made up with a recent picture attached, (2) the identification card filled out and (3) the “What Do I Do” card at hand you can greatly increase the odds of a quick find substantially.

Help Our Cause

Fees are never charged for missing persons trailing services, so your generosity ensures that K-9 Trackers can continue serving our community.

Kimberly and her team personally invest their own time, resources, and funds to train both themselves and their K-9 partners — we're talking gear, supplies, and specialized training. They also cover the costs of using their personal vehicles to attend trainings and respond to search calls throughout the community. Your donations play a vital role in their success, helping provide essential equipment and cover critical operational expenses.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach out to us at kimberly@k9trackers.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

A track/trail dog follows a specific odor from a missing pet in the air or on the ground starting at the “point of loss.” Our dogs can identify the direction of travel and the area in which the missing pet has been, and can even determine if the pet was removed from the area.
